The Digital Tool Kit: Headshots

The next step to honing your digital presence is having professional headshots! It is important to make a great first impression by choosing thoughtful headshots that showcase the artist that you are. We’ve put together some tips to help get the ball rolling on headshots that can lead to success!

First, it is crucial to do your research and make an appointment with a professional photographer that has experience specifically shooting actor headshots. Photographers can come at different price points, so do your research and find one in your budget that does great work. Make sure to consult with the photographer before your appointment to ensure they have the right style and approach to get you the results that you need. Most actors ensure that they have two high-quality headshots that show range. Sometimes this means a shot that is serious and a shot that has a high energy vibe, or a shot that shows teeth and a shot that doesn’t! This provides an opportunity for the actor to tailor the headshot to the audition by showing the side of you that matches the project. Since a headshot is often Casting’s first impression of the actor, the importance of showing range cannot be overstated.

After you have cultivated your perfect headshots, it is time to consider how to present the physical copies. Do make sure that your name appears on the front of the photo. Bottom left or right is fine. Pick an easy to read font in a color that stands out from the photo background (unless you use a border).

We do not recommend printing your resume on the back of the headshot. Casting directors and agents consistently assert that this is the wrong approach. Instead, your resume should be on a separate piece of paper stapled to the back of the headshot. Printing on high quality photo paper is also an important aspect of physical headshots. Quality paper will facilitate a high-quality photo better, and will help sell you as a polished professional in the audition room.

Whether your perfect headshot is landscape or portrait, all that matters is that it really represents YOU! Casting directors want to get a sense of who you are in the short time you get in the audition room. A solid, high-quality headshot can help boost your success and remind casting of who you are long after the audition process.

Lastly, consistency is key! When you get new headshots, make sure to update your online platforms. Your most recent headshots should be showcased on your website and casting profiles to ensure continuity and recognizability. At Stage Door Designs we are happy to help our clients find top-notch photographers and help narrow down pictures to find the perfect shot! Book a time now to discuss your headshots!
