The Importance of Favicons

For today's blog post, we're discussing a (very) small aspect of your website that can make a big impact and make your website even more professional! You may not have heard of them before, but you have definitely seen them!

​A favicon is the little icon that shows up pretty much anywhere you see your site name.

Favicons are an important part of branding, and typically consist of a logo, initials, or symbols that are readily associated with whatever website you are on. They can also help people locate your page faster when they have a bunch of tabs open, or your site is on a long list of other sites.

So, why should you have a favicon on your site? Well, there are a bunch of reasons, but one of the main ones is that having one can actually indirectly improve your search engine ranking. It is an easy way for people to be able to identify your website quickly. Think about when you're sorting through your tabs; are you looking at the site name, or at the little logo on the side? Having that identifier next to your site helps for easier user experience, which as a result will help your site gain traffic, improving your search engine ranking. It's also the perfect way to round out your personal or company branding, and add a level of legitimacy to your site that gives the user a sense of trust when going to and clicking on your website.

*NOTE* Because favicons are extremely small, they must be simple. Usually, something like one letter in the font of your choice, or a very simple image will work best. Photos do not work well because they are too complex. In addition, a favicon must be a square image.
